Richmond Pediatric Team

The Richmond Pediatric Team provides Nursing, Occupational Therapy (OT), and Physical Therapy (PT) services.

This team offers observation and consultation of children with complex medical needs, including those who require palliative care. The team also provides education and training for school staff and collaborates with other community partners and specialists to facilitate continuity of care. The goal of the team is to help these children lead active, healthy lives in their school, home and communities. 

Nursing Support Services Coordinators provide:

  • Assessment of children up to age 19 with complex medical needs to determine their eligibility for services

  • In partnership with the child and their family, development and implementation of Individualized Health Care Plans.

  • Training and support to school staff to care for children with health issues, such as diabetes, tube feedings, and seizures 

Physical Therapists provide:  

  • Assessment and assistance with funding for equipment e.g. wheelchairs, walkers, standing frames, lifts and slings, etc.

  • Consultation on:

    • Lifting and transfers

    • Safety concerns e.g. falls

    • Gross motor function e.g. mobility; balance and coordination; participation in physical education and recreation  

    • Home and community accessibility

    Occupational Therapists provide:

    • Assessment and assistance with funding for wheelchairs and other equipment e.g. bath seats

    • Consultation on:

      • Safe feeding procedures

      • Self-care activities e.g. toileting, dressing

      • Fine motor skill development  e.g. printing and cutting 

      • Assistive technology  e.g. Specialized computers

      • Home and community accessibility

      • Sensory processing  e.g. to assist with emotional regulation

    Is there a cost? 

    • There is no charge for the Richmond Pediatric Team services

    • There may be costs for medical supplies and equipment if a family is not covered by the BC Medical Plan or other government programs

    How do I access the Richmond Pediatric Team?

    • Nursing Support Services (NSS) 

      • A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required

      • To make a referral, email/fax the NSS referral form to the contact information listed on the form

    • Physical and Occupational Therapy

      • A referral is accepted from health care providers, families and schools

    Referrals are screened and prioritized.
