Born and raised in Prince Rupert, Cliff Fregin is Haida from Old Massett, Haida Gwaii and has been extensively involved in aboriginal community economic and business development throughout Canada for over 25 years. During his time as Executive Director of the Gwaii Trust – a partnership between the Haida Nation and the settlers on Haida Gwaii – Cliff managed a perpetual trust fund valued at over $62 million and oversaw the dispersal of approximately $20 million to socio-economic projects on Haida Gwaii.
In December 2002, Cliff was hired by the National Aboriginal Capital Corporation Association (NACCA) as Chief Operating Officer responsible for finance and programs in Ottawa. NACCA is an association of 55 Aboriginal Financial Institutions that provide high risk small business development financing and services to aboriginal entrepreneurs throughout Canada.
Since October 2006, Cliff Fregin has led the New Relationship Trust (NRT) as Chief Executive Officer. NRT is a Trust fund charged with building capacity for British Columbia First Nations by supporting First Nation governance, economic development, education, language revitalization, and youth & Elders initiatives. It has disbursed over $55 million and has a market value of over $92M. In November 2015, Cliff became Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Haida Enterprise Corporation (HaiCo). He joined the Board of VCH in March 2016.
