Dr. Patrick O’Connor is responsible for the leadership and direction of medical affairs and physician compensation across Vancouver Coastal Health, with a special emphasis on partnering with physicians to drive excellence. Dr. O’Connor joined the medical staff at Vancouver General Hospital in 1989 in the Department of Anaesthesia.
Since then, he has taken on numerous leadership roles including medical director of the Cardiac ICU; division head for Cardiac Anaesthesia; and medical director of Perioperative Services. He was appointed senior medical director at Vancouver Acute in 2004 and has played a key role in several major initiatives including the Vancouver Acute Care Management Initiative and the Emergency Decongestion Pilot.
In his current role, he works closely with the Ministry of Health and UBC in development of the Academic Health Sciences Network/Centre and is regional executive sponsor for Critical Care, Medicine, the Cardiac program, Laboratory and the VCH Research Institute. A graduate of Dalhousie University, Dr. O’Connor has been a member of the medical staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, Victoria General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. Dr. O’Connor is a clinical professor in the Department of Anaesthesia, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia and a practicing Anesthesiologist at Vancouver Acute.
