Sheena, Nurse Practitioner with the Respirology Services at Vancouver General Hospital
“The supportive teaching environment at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) was something I really appreciated and was proud to be a part of,” says Sheena, who previously trained and worked as a Registered Nurse at VGH. When the opportunity to return as a Nurse Practitioner came up, she discussed the option with a colleague friend who had nothing but positive experiences to share. “I decided to take the role on and haven’t regretted it since!” shares Sheena.
She works as the Pleural Disease Nurse Practitioner with the Respirology Services. She also follows inpatients on the Respiratory ward who are on chronic ventilation. “What I enjoy most about this role is the opportunity to support staff and patients in the hospital as well as the community, the variation keeps things interesting!”

To help Sheena transition into this specialty role, a fellowship was developed to ensure her success and provide ongoing support. The physicians she works with have been incredibly supportive and encouraging, especially the Interventional Respirologists who helped shape her role. “I also feel very fortunate to work with other Nurse Practitioners at VCH who have been great mentors."
Sheena explains how the new VCH Values: We Care for Everyone, We are Always Learning, and We Strive for Better Results, are demonstrated at work during her collaborations with the interdisciplinary team. “It is within these discussions where I have an opportunity to see how I can support patients and team members, gain new knowledge and in turn, create better outcomes."
