Celebrating Housekeeping Environmental Services

You have likely seen Environmental Services staff (also known as Housekeeping) on the front lines keeping Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) facilities clean and safe for employees, patients and visitors.

International Housekeepers and Environmental Services Week, next week from September 11 to 17, is dedicated to recognizing the efforts of these hard-working staff members.

We recently welcomed food services staff as VCH employees and Environmental Services will be joining the oneVCH team next month, on October 28.

Many people are familiar with the terms 'janitorial' or 'housekeeping' but these terms don't necessarily encompass all their responsibilities. Rather, the role of Environmental Services is to work with hospital staff to keep employees, patients and visitors safe with proper medical cleaning and disinfecting.

“We've been working together for a long time, and I look forward to continuing the relationships we've built over the years when Environmental Services staff become VCH employees," said Iasmim Pereira, Executive Director, Environmental Services. “They work on the front lines, supported by their managers and supervisors, who are committed to making our hospitals clean and safe for everyone."

Environmental Services works closely with infection control and patient care teams to clean and disinfect clinical and non-clinical areas, including patient care rooms, offices, washrooms and common areas. They also remove garbage, recycling, soiled linen and bio-hazard waste, vacuum carpets, clean and polish floors and disinfect walls and beds, among other duties.

“With the onset of the pandemic, staff have responded with innovative methods for combating viruses and bacteria. Their work is vital to our operations and patients and staff rely on the work they do," Pereira said.
