Last month at the District of North Vancouver's 2018 Youth Awards, the mayor and council honoured a group of young people who are working hard to make life better for themselves, their peers or the community. The district also honoured individuals in the "Outstanding Support of Youth" category. Among them was Vancouver Coastal Health's Terry Bulych. She is the Team Lead for Youth Mental Health & Susbstance Use at Foundry North Shore, who has supported local youth needing clinical counselling and services for over 20 years.
Here is what District Mayor Richard Walton said about Terry:
“Terry works with our most marginalized youth who are struggling with addictions and the possible associated issues including mental health issues, family trauma, family breakdown, violence and homelessness. Terry is a very strong and steady leader in the youth service field since she started. Terry spearheaded and built the partnerships for the new Foundry youth mental health hub.
She brought skills and expertise, compassion and determination to the work, but also had the respect of all the partners, including the District who provides funding to Youth Outreach staff who use the centre. Every agency wanted to be part of Foundry because they trusted and respected Terry's vision to ensure that the centre would be youth focussed and provide the very best service to those youth most in need.
Terry brought youth advisory groups, parents and other youth agencies together to work collaboratively in the Foundry model. In the process, she has allowed youth a very strong voice in how the Foundry should assist youth with complex needs. Without Terry, the Foundry would not be the amazing place it is.
The North Shore is lucky to have Terry as a supporter of youth!"
Terry, of course, was thrilled to receive the award. But she says improving and developing youth services never happens in isolation.
"Working with the broader youth service provider network has been instrumental in developing and expanding youth services over the years and Foundry is a true testament to what can be achieved through joint collaboration and partnerships," says Terry. "I'm grateful to my many VCH and community colleagues for sharing this journey with me… and very much appreciate their long term support."
Dale Handley, Manager (Interim) Foundry North Shore, was equally effusive of Terry's accomplishments.
"Terry has been instrumental in providing, developing and implementing mental health and substance use services on the North Shore," says Dale. "More recently, Terry has had the extremely difficult task of not only redesigning many of the services provided by VCH to youth, but also collaborating and integrating the many wonderful services we have on the North Shore. This has taken a significant amount of dedication and hard work to do, and while the journey is ongoing, we would not be in the position we are in right not had it now been for Terry."
