Finding another purpose in life

Jan, Community Health Worker on Bowen Island

“After being retired for eight years, I felt the need for another purpose in my life. I had recently lost a brother and a sister, who with the help of Community Health Workers were able to remain in their homes. I knew that I wanted to give back and make a difference, so at the age of 55 I went back to school to take the Health Care Assistant Program - one of the best decisions I have ever made," shares Jan, Community Health Worker (CHW). “I am continuously learning, and I am so grateful that my line of work allows me an endless supply of new knowledge."

Jan works on Bowen Island and visits clients in their home to provide support to those who have acute, chronic, palliative or rehabilitative needs. “As a Health Care Worker, I feel that we can make a tremendous difference not only for our client's overall well-being but also in creating peace of mind for their family members." Jan loves helping clients in their homes where they are surrounded by familiar things they love. She also loves that every day is different and that every client is unique in their own way.

“I believe that our decisions should be based on client centred care, and I am so grateful that my supervisor and our schedulers support me by giving me the flexibility to make each day as efficient and effective as possible," shares Jan.

Jan is passionate about helping others and making a difference in people's lives. “I always try to look at the positive and definitely love to bring humour to the workplace. I believe in paying it forward, being kind, and at the end of the day knowing that I made a positive difference in someone's life and put a smile on their face."
