More than 80 community members from Bella Bella and Denny Island attended R.W. Large Memorial Hospital's and the Bella Bella medical clinic's first-ever open house, which was held under sunny skies on the Central Coast on Wednesday, June 20th.
“It was a very positive and engaging gathering for VCH [Vancouver Coastal Health], Haílíka̓s Heiltsuk Health Centre and the community," says Gary Housty, hospital program manager. “We came together as a committee to plan, implement and host this forum as a group (medical director, managers, supervisors with the support of our director William Findlay). Our goal was to introduce and share all of our programs and services and to showcase our partnership with the Haílíka̓s Heiltsuk Health Centre and Heiltsuk community, including Denny Island, Ocean Falls, and Klemtu."
The most exciting and busy part for the staff was creating RawShorts videos thanks to Emily Gunn, Intensive Case Management Coordinator. Instead of speaking to each program, the staff introduced their services through patient journeys through three video clips:
- Video #1: Patient 'Abigail' who journeyed through the Bella Bella Medical Clinic and left the facility from our Pharmacy with her Rx.
- Video #2: Patient 'Barry' who journeyed through by entering the ED via EHS with a head injury. Barry was admitted to AC and referred to many services, including Health Center patient travel unit and diagnostic tests and later discharged.
- Video #3: Behind the scenes leadership (Chief Operating Officer – COO Karin Olson, director – William Findlay, program manager - Gary, medical director – Dr. Laurie Ann Shearer, coordinator, Administrative Services – Dega Hersi), administration/clerical staff (medical records, business office, clinic assistants), support services (laundry, dietary, housekeeping) and FMO (Maintenance).
“It was a very inspiring and engaging process with community," says Gary. “It brought our teams and departments together to share our common ground on delivering health services in our small rural hospital. We are grateful to have had our COO's present as well as director presentations [William for VCH; Keith Marshall for Health Center]."
A special shout-out goes to Dr. Shearer, who brought up the cakes for the BBQ all the way from White Rock.
