Fishing closure in response to the English Bay oil spill

16/04/2015
Fisheries and Oceans Canada has prohibited recreational fishing of shellfish and ground fish in Burrard Inlet due to the oil spill in English Bay.
The closure order was recommended by Vancouver Coastal Health and prohibits harvesting of crabs and the angling of flounder, sole and other ground fish in waters possibly affected by the fuel spill.

Where is the fishing closure?

The order applies to Burrard Inlet from the Lions Gate Bridge west to the mouth of the Georgia Straight at Point Grey and Point Atkinson. This area includes Jericho beach in Vancouver and Lighthouse Park, Ambleside and Dundarave beaches in West Vancouver.
The closure is a precautionary measure and will be reviewed when lab results show whether or not the oil spill is affecting these fish. There is an ongoing closure of harvesting clams, prawns, mussels and other bivalves in this area which continues to be in effect.
