Gifting a bit of normalcy in difficult times

During this difficult time living through a global pandemic, the VGH Gift Shop has been working to connect patients and their loved ones through small comforts.

“We've created a new service taking orders by phone and delivering the items to the patients, many who cannot have visitors at this time," says Rosalba Fasan, Gift Shop Manager.

The gift shop has a wide variety of items for sale, including necessities such as phone chargers, socks and toiletries, as well as things that can make a hospital stay more pleasant like used and new books, DVDs and magazines. All proceeds fund VGH hospital services.

Mei Sam, VGH Social Worker Assistant, placed a standing order for her aunt – two newspapers delivered to her every morning. She also added little gifts on some days, such as coconut water or a treat.

“I am very happy with the delivery service because the team delivered the goods to my aunt's room every morning on time and sometimes in the afternoon," says Mei. “I am grateful that this service is available. The delivery service made her stay in the hospital more pleasant."

Rosalba says the gift shop provides people with a bit of respite, and showcases how VCH “cares for everyone" – caring for our patients, their families, our colleagues and ourselves.

“We've had people coming in and obviously feeling quite distressed while their loved ones are upstairs feeling isolated," says Rosalba. “One mom from Victoria, whose son was a patient and not doing well, spent an hour in the shop. It was a mental break during a really emotional time. Here, they can talk to someone that empathizes with them who is not a doctor or nurse."

Now on offer are gift cards which patients can use for whatever they need — flip flops, underwear or tampons.

Additionally, the shop is a great resource for staff. They have hand-made scrub caps, cloth masks, and ear savers for sale. Currently on offer are 3D printed, non-medical shields, free for staff.

If looking for a handcrafted, artisanal gift, they also have you covered. The shop carries Indigenous and locally-made bath products, candles, jewelry, clothing and more.

“We wanted to create a nice space for patients and employees that feels like a boutique shop," says Rosalba. “A bit of normalcy in crazy times."
