Gratitude expressed in art at Pemberton Health Centre

The Pemberton Health Centre was chosen to be the first mural site of the Outside Voices Mural Project, a new public art initiative that will bring the streets of downtown Pemberton to life with awe-inspiring murals. Dave Petko, a Whistler-based visual artist and tattoo artist, was selected by a jury made up of team members from the Pemberton Arts Council, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and the Village of Pemberton to create the mural at the Pemberton Health Care Centre. The colourful and bold wall painting was unveiled just in time for Canada Day.

“The past two years have been challenging on health care workers and our community members alike. We are so grateful for all of the support we have been shown by the Pemberton community during the pandemic and beyond," said Ira Roness, Interim Director, Sea to Sky Acute Services at Vancouver Coastal Health.  “We're delighted that the Pemberton Health Centre is the home of the first mural from this wonderful initiative and we're excited about Dave Petko's mural art at Lil'wat Territory."

“During the past few years with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pemberton Health Centre has been more critical to our community than ever. We thought there would be no better way to show our appreciation for the hard work and staff of the center than to put a bright mural on the side of the wall so that they can see our gratitude every day as they come in for work," says Anna Lynch, Executive Director of Pemberton Arts Council.

Dave Petko is a former Pemberton resident. He integrated his memories of the village into his mural design. “To me, Pemberton has every colour in the rainbow and I wanted the mural to incorporate all of these elements in some small and unique way. I have a blast painting large scale and really love making public art and talking to people of the community. What better way to brighten up the town than by leaving a beautiful colourful mural for locals and visitors alike?" says Petko.
