Happy Nurse Practitioner (NP) Week! We are proud that NPs have been part of VCH for the past 14 years, bringing their knowledge and values of nursing together with medicine. Initially, there were only five NPs at VCH, and now the department has grown to 90 NPs working in over 100 positions across the organization!
We met with Nadeem, to learn more about his role as a Nurse Practitioner with the Interdisciplinary Long-Term Care Team, as well as the Regional Department Head with the VCH Department of Nurse Practitioners. He enjoys working with colleagues who are passionate about long-term care and providing care to the older adult population. “I've always really enjoyed working in the area of geriatrics and find working in this area to be very satisfying and rewarding," says Nadeem.
He recalls an inspirational moment involving collaborative teamwork to support a resident. One of the facilities Nadeem supports was struggling to manage a particular resident's dementia-related behaviours. “It was really inspiring to see different members of the team work together (and with the resident's family) to formulate a resident-focused plan to manage the behaviours, and which was reflective of everyone involved."
VCH strongly supports his continuing education. By seeking out educational opportunities to obtain current best practice knowledge to achieve optimal resident outcomes, Nadeem embodies the VCH Values “We Are Always Learning" and “We Strive for Better Results" within his role. He also lives the value “We Care for Everyone" every day while providing care to older adults residing in long-term care facilities.
VCH recognizes the growing role of NPs and continues to expand NP opportunities across community and acute care settings. To learn about NP careers at VCH visit: careers.vch.ca
