Harnessing the healing power of art

Under the VGH campus stretches a series of corridors connecting 17 buildings from the Diamond Health Care Centre to Heather Pavilion and even the BC Cancer Agency.

Every week hundreds of patients make their way through the tunnel as they head to appointments, go for medical imaging and coordinate treatment with the BC Cancer Agency.

Now two areas in the tunnel are getting mural makeovers.

Vancouver artist Sean Karemaker has harnessed the healing power of art to create two incredible landscape murals for the Blackmore and Heather Pavilion elevator banks.

Inspired by BC’s majestic natural landscape, Sean hopes his art can help patients during what can be a very stressful time. “I know I can only do so much,” he says. “But I hope these murals help patients feel better. I wanted to help patients find the inner calmness and centredness I feel when I’m surrounded by nature.”

Watch the video below to see a time lapse of one of the murals taking shape.
