Dr. Kate Granger, a UK physician, started the #hellomynameis campaign after her experiences as a patient. Kate believed introductions run much deeper than common courtesy; they are about making a human connection between one human being who is suffering and vulnerable, and another human being who wishes to help.
It all starts with an introduction.
Dr. Kate Granger, was a UK physician battling terminal cancer, when she noticed what a huge difference introductions by health care providers had on her experiences as a partient. She believed that introductions run much deeper than common courtesy; that they are about making a human connection between one human being who is suffering and vulnerable, and another human being who wishes to help. They begin therapeutic relationships and can instantly build trust in difficult circumstances
As a result of her experience, Kate started the #hellomynameis campaign in the UK and it has since become an international movement.
Tuesday, July 23rd 2019 is the international #hellomynameis day and is aimed at encouraging healthcare staff to be intentional about introducing themselves and their roles in all encounters with patients and care givers. VCH will be joining countries across the globe in celebrating this day.
How this links to the VCH values and strategic priorities
Improving the patient experience at VCH is key to our core values of caring for everyone, ensuring we are always learning and striving for better results. The #hellomynameis campaign allows us to come together as a team, be intententional about our introductions on this day, and partner with our patients and caregivers to optimize the patient experience and work towards exceptional care.
On July 23, we invite you to participate with healthcare providers around the world in the #hellomynameis campaign by being particularly mindful of the 3 components of a good introduction in a healthcare setting:
- Introduce yourselves to patients/families/caregivers (first name only for privacy reasons)
- Let the patient know your role and what you are about to do
- Ask the patient “How can I help you?"
While July 23rd is the official #hellomynameis Day, at VCH our goal is to have these conversations in all encounters with patients and caregivers.
A tool kit was created to provide resources to teams looking to celebrate the campaign, which includes:
