In 2019 and 2020, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) transitioned from using external providers to using VCH staff to deliver Home Support services. During this transition, we had the opportunity to review information about Home Support and created new materials that provide comprehensive information about the service and how to access it.
The project team undertook a robust engagement process to update the existing Regional Home Support Pamphlet and create a new Regional Home Support Client Handbook. Community Engagement Advisory Network (CEAN) members provided input on making the materials clear and meaningful to clients and families accessing Home Support and Home Health services. Engagement with VCH community partners on the translations of materials uncovered the need for standardized terminology in other languages for terms such as Community Health Worker, Registered Nurse, Home Health and Home Support. Engagement with VCH Aboriginal Health highlighted a lack of representation of Indigenous communities in images and the need for specialized Indigenous supports. The project team is beginning conversations with the Aboriginal Health team to explore processes for involvement of Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers in Home Support.
