Santa and team deliver gift of vaccination to seafarers

A team of immunizers from Vancouver Coastal (VCH) headed out to sea again this month – but this time, they were joined by a special guest to help immunize as many seafarers with the COVID-19 vaccine as possible.

Crew members eagerly rolled up their sleeves to get their jab. A total of 76 seafarers from six ships received their first or second dose during the special vaccination clinic with Santa (a.k.a. Paul Maximus).

Since September, a team of immunizers have been boarding the giant freighters that dot English Bay and Vancouver Harbour. The team has embarked on dozen of ships and immunized hundreds of sailors and crew members from across the globe including, the Philippines, China, Korea, India and Ukraine. It is part of VCH's commitment and contribution to the global fight against COVDI-19.

The team consists of immunizers, an IPAC (infection prevention and control) clinician, as well as support staff for after-care and administration. Working with a number of different partners including CERES, Chamber of Shipping, Port of Vancouver, the BC Maritime Employers Association and the various terminals in the region, the team from VCH hit up as many ships as they can.

While there are some logistical challenges to offering these clinics, the immunizers are always greeted by a grateful crew.
