Transgender Awareness Week: a time to uplift trans voices and work to break down barriers

15/11/2022

Transgender Awareness Week (November 13 to 19), celebrates the resilience and rich cultural tapestry of the transgender community in Canada and abroad. During this period, it's important to uplift and centre the voices and experiences of trans and gender diverse staff, patients and community members through supportive action and education. The week leads up to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on Nov 20, commemorating the lives lost due to rising rates of anti-trans violence.

Barriers commonly encountered by trans folks accessing care include: unavailability of trans-competent care providers, mistrust toward care providers, and an institutional lack of trans-inclusive policies, services and facilities. In order to better meet the needs of the transgender community, it is crucial to take concrete steps to address these barriers and inequities within your own scope of practice and workplace.
