Individuals and teams from Vancouver Coastal Health were recognized at the Oscars of BC health care—The BC Health Care Awards—on June 25th in Vancouver. The annual awards, presented by the Health Employers Association of BC, celebrate successes and achievements and recognize people who provide outstanding care and support. Vancouver Coastal Health's C. difficile Canine Scent Detection Program garnered a coveted Gold Apple for pioneering an innovative approach to C. difficile detection and infection control that has the potential for widespread impact. Congratulations to the winning team of Dr. Elizabeth Bryce, Dr. Diane Roscoe, Allison Muniak, Teresa Zurberg, Jaime Kinna, Sarah Rothwell, Komathi Ayakar, Markus Zurberg, VGH Environmental Services, VCH Infection Control Practitioners and last, but not least, our four legged heroes Angus and Dodger.
The VGH Emergency Department Health Workplace Initiative took top spot for their team efforts to combat violence in the emergency department. As you would expect in any busy ED, staff often face difficult situations and aggressive or violent patients. A multi-disciplinary team was formed two years ago to improve workplace health and safety for staff and patients. Dr. Faisal Khosa is the Health Care Hero for Vancouver Coastal Health. He is a mentor and pioneer in the fields of academic medicine, medical education and research. It was his work for as a tireless advocate for equality in health care that caught the eye of the judging panel. Congratulations Dr. Khosa.
Congratulations to all of this year's BC Health Care Award nominees and winners, including the Vancouver Shared Care Team. The team received an Award of Merit for RACETM, a telephone line where primary care providers can access specialist advice within two hours.
HEABC was both proud and saddened to announce a new award this year, the Dianna Mah-Jones Award of Excellence in Person Centred Care. Dianna was a beloved member of the VCH family who was tragically killed along with her husband last year. Dianna was the Provincial Health Care Hero for 2017. "We hope that by naming this award in her honour, we will keep her memory and legacy alive and inspire others to deliver health care that is respectful of the needs, values and preferences of individuals."
