What is the role of a nurse practitioner?

To mark National Nursing Week (May 8 to 14), Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is releasing a new video on the role of nurse practitioners.

Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses with a master’s degree. They bring their core knowledge and values of nursing together with medicine to add another dimension to patient care.

At VCH, nurse practitioners work in a variety of community and acute care settings. They are leaders and autonomous practitioners who work collaboratively with team members to provide the highest quality care to their patients.

Introduced in BC in 2005, the role of nurse practitioner remains misunderstood by many, including health care providers. So, we asked Vancouver nurse practitioners — and physicians who work with them — to answer the question: What is the role of a nurse practitioner?
