Glen Garrick received the TechGREEN Individual Award from the ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC) on Saturday, November 5th.

The TechGreen Award The TechGREEN Individual Award is given to persons who take a lead role in environmental initiatives and have a significant positive impact on green living, sustainable best practices, energy conservation and environmental benefit.

About Glen and the C3 communityWhen Glen joined Vancouver Coastal Health in 2008, he secured a partnership with Fortis BC to create an online community among 65,000 health care employees, integrating social media, game theory and change management into a grassroots engagement tool called “Cut the Carbon Community” or “C3”. The intent was to help create healthier environments by reducing the collective carbon footprint of health care operations in the Lower Mainland. The C3 community is a key element to support VCH’s commitment to leadership in environmental sustainability.

“C3 is a ‘one-stop’ resource for energy efficiency and savings,” Glen comments, “where you can take simple conservation steps online like getting a bus pass, to discussing conservation questions and spreading ideas among thousands of staff members across the four Lower Mainland health organizations.”

Nearly a year along, the program is expanding. Participants have reduced their carbon footprint by over 200 tons, and roughly 200 energy and environmental sustainability-related discussion threads have been logged onto the site.

“A program like this takes a lot of time and effort, and it’s gratifying to see it having its impact on a healthier environment,” Glen says. “And we are not done yet and will keep improving the C3 community and its green impact.”
