VCH and VCH Research Institute introduce world’s largest and most advanced centre for spinal cord injury research and patient care British Columbians will soon be able to access the world’s largest, most advanced and most comprehensive facility devoted to spinal cord injury research and patient care.
The Blusson Spinal Cord Centre is beginning to roll out the welcome mat. The six-storey, $45-million centre is home to ICORD (the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries) and is a partnership of Vancouver Coastal Health, the University of British Columbia, Rick Hansen Foundation, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation.
The second floor of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, run by Vancouver Coastal Health, is home to the Brenda and David McLean Integrated Spine Clinic, which merges clinics previously located in different buildings and at different hospital sites across the city. It will provide one-stop outpatient care including specialized services such as pain management, sexual health, skin and wound care, urodynamics (disorders of the lower urinary tract) and surgery.
No need to display the wheelchair disability sign here – the centre is fully accessible; a ramp at a five per cent slope serving the building’s three public floors, elevators equipped with specialized kick-plates to allow everyone to control them, all outlets and light switches placed three feet above the floor and all work/lab benches are fully adjustable. Right now, our staff are putting the finishing touches on the second floor and preparing to move in.
At this time, any spinal cord injury related appointments you may have will take place in current clinics. Your health care provider will give you plenty of notice once appointments begin in the new centre.
