VANCOUVER – The ninth annual edition of the Sox in the City campaign has wrapped up another successful year, generating donations of more than 15,000 socks throughout the region.

Sox in the City is the annual Vancouver Coastal Health campaign that collects socks for use by the Health Contact Centre, located just off the corner of Main and Hastings in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The centre offers a safe refuge and provides basic health services for neighbourhood residents, many of whom are homeless. A key focus of the centre is proper foot-care.

“We’d like to thank everyone who donated to this year’s campaign,” said Sonja Sinclair, program coordinator at VCH’s Health Contact Centre. “We want everyone to know just how much their donation means to our clients – most of whom consider a clean pair of socks a luxury.”

Warm, dry feet are a must for the many homeless people in Vancouver who rely on their feet as their main mode of transportation. Even a small blister can trigger serious infection that can result in long hospital stays and even lead to life-threatening illnesses or amputations, all of which can be prevented with a pair of clean, dry socks.

As part of the campaign kick-off on Nov. 30, students from John Oliver high school donated 4,055 pairs. Other significant donations came from the Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (1,200 pairs), the City of Vancouver (1,200 pairs), Lions Gate Hospital (800 pairs) and Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre (750 pairs).

Sox in the City will return for its 10th anniversary edition in December 2010.

Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for the delivery of $2.9 billion in community, hospital and residential care to more than one million people in communities, including Richmond, Vancouver, the North Shore, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky corridor, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.
