March 1, 2010VANCOUVER – First phase construction on the St Mary’s Hospital expansion and renovation project is set to begin in late April, with general site preparation and excavation. A tender for this $900,000 early work contract has been posted to BC Bid. With a deadline of March 25, the tender of the early work package will be followed by a second tender in mid-April. Worth $30 million, this second-phase contract will result in the actual construction start of this much anticipated community project. “The new St Mary’s has been in the planning stages for a long time, and we’d like to thank the community for its patience,” said Mary Ackenhusen, Chief Operating Officer at Vancouver Coastal Health-Coastal. “When VCH breaks ground later this spring, the community can be assured that we will be well on our way to having a hospital that will showcase the latest in infection controls and green building design. The new St Mary’s will be a community asset in which staff will be able to deliver the highest quality of safe patient care.” The St Mary’s rebuild will increase the size of the hospital by almost 50 per cent, with more inpatient beds, larger ambulatory care and radiology areas, a new emergency department, and capacity for more surgical procedures. Most notably, all patient rooms in the new St Mary’s will be single occupancy. Single occupancy rooms are widely recognized as enhancing infection control and patient safety. Research shows this design ultimately pays for itself through a patient’s shorter length of hospital stay. Completion of the expansion project is slated for fall 2011, while renovation construction will be complete by fall of 2012. Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for the delivery of $2.9 billion in community, hospital and residential care to more than one million people in communities, including Richmond, Vancouver, the North Shore, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky corridor, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.
