Health Career Access Program (HCAP)

The new Health Career Access Program (HCAP) is an initiative announced by the B. C. Ministry of Health which gives people the opportunity to receive paid education and on-the job training to support our COVID-19 response. The HCAP introduces a new entry level, non clinical support role, called the Health Care Support Worker (HCSW), to increase the number of health care assistants at Long-Term Care (LTC) and Seniors' Assisted Living (SAL) facilities, and Home Support setting throughout the province. The HCSW role offers entrants the opportunity to complete streamlined training to become Health Care Assistants (HCA) while working as an HCSW. Participants in this program have two distant roles:

  1. Working in a non-clinical role as a Health Care Support Worker (HCSW)

  2. Attending Post-Secondary education to become a Health Care Assistant (HCA)

If you are interested in becoming an HCSW, refer to the BC government's Work in the health care sector page.

An education series has been created to support HCSWs in the workplace! Please join nurse educators from LTC & AL profession practice connect with HCSWs and HCSW support staff. Take this opportunity to further develop skills in providing support to residents and new staff at your worksite. Register for sessions on Learning Hub course number 26624. Click here to register.
