Nursing Students

Glucometer Access

Nursing students on a practicum placement within Vancouver Coastal Health use a generic student ID for the Accu-chek Inform II glucometer.  Please check with your school for the current ID to use.  Training will be given by your preceptor or on-site group instructor.  

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) PCIS

OMNICELL

Instructors email the following information to VHOmnicellSystemAdministrator.

  • Instructor name and school
  • Student's name
  • Student/Instructor User ID (auto provisioned  "S" or "E" account number)
  • Location of placement
  • Start and end dates of placement

It is asked that this is done at least 2 weeks in advance to guarantee access when the instructors and students arrive on site.

Note: returning students who have been previously auto provisioned an "S" account number will not have their account information resent for their future placements.  Students are to keep their account information for their entire program to pass along to instructors, if needed.  

Training

Students in a preceptorship are trained by their preceptor/supervisor.

For group placements it is the responsibility of the on-site faculty to train the students in their group.  We ask on-site faculty to arrange for an Omnicell training session before beginning the clinical experience using a school instructor to school instructor approach.

University of British Columbia Hospital (UBCH)

OMNICELL

Instructors email the Unit managers or Unit educators with the following information:

  • Instructor name and school
  • Student's name
  • Student/Instructor User ID (auto provisioned  "S" or "E" account number)
  • Location of placement
  • Start and end dates of placement

Please ask the Unit manager or educator to forward the email to RHSOmnicellPharmacySystem

  • Instructor name and school
  • Student’s full name (first letter of first name and up to 7 letters of last name will be used
  • Student/Instructor User ID (auto provisioned  "S" or "E" account number)
  • Location of placement
  • Start and end dates of placement

It is asked that this is done at least 2 weeks in advance to guarantee access when the instructors and students arrive on site.

Medication Cart Access

Once the instructor/students obtains their Photo ID, instructors email the following information to lghmedcarts@vch.ca

  • Instructor name and school
  • Student’s name
  • First 6 digits on the back of the Photo ID
  • Start and end dates of placement

It is asked that this is done at least 2 weeks in advance to guarantee access to medication dispensing systems when the instructors and students arrive on site.

All questions or concerns in relation to Photo ID can be directed to Student Practice Education at VCH Placements 

Generic cards for the medication carts are available for daily sign out from switchboard while the students are waiting for their Photo ID.  To be authorized to sign them out, instructors should email Barb Ferreira at Barb.Ferreira@vch.ca from their school email address to request being put on the list.

Vancouver, North Shore, Coast Garabaldi and Richmond Community

PARIS / EMR

All Primary Access Regional Information System (PARIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) training requests for school instructors and students are sent by the Student Practice Education Department.  Training requests are sent approximately three weeks before the practicum start date. 

If the school instructors would like to hold spots for PARIS / EMR training dates before the students are assigned, please contact your school placing coordinator no later than 1.5 months before the placement start date. If you have any queries, please e-mail VCH Placements 

The registration confirmation email from PARIS/EMR will be sent to the student's school e-mails by the PARIS/EMR team.

Pixalere

A reminder email will be sent to the school Placing Coordinator approximately one month in advance of the placement start date for students at a destination that uses Pixalere.
