#Hellomynameis campaign

Simple introductions. Human Connection. Compassionate practice.

This is the essence of the #hellomynameis campaign. This campaign was started in the UK by Dr. Kate Granger, a physician battling terminal cancer. As a patient, Kate noticed what a huge difference she felt when medical staff introduced themselves to her before delivering her care. Kate went on to raise awareness about the importance of introductions in health-care in the UK and #hellomynameis is now an international movement.

While July 23 marks International #hellomynameis Day, the goal at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is to embed these conversations into everyday practice.  Since 2019, VCH has joined countries across the globe in celebrating this day and spreading Kate’s message.

COVID and Human Connection

The COVID-19 pandemic has really changed the face of health-care as we know it – for both patients and health-care staff. The ever-changing environment, need for physical distancing and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) has changed health-care facilities into a new reality for staff, as well as patients and clients. During this unprecedented time of concern and uncertainty, simple introductions and human connection have become more important than ever.

Simple introductions

The #hellomynameis campaign is about putting compassionate practice at the heart of health-care by taking the time to connect with patients, clients and residents with three easy steps:

  • Introduce ourselves to them and their family/caregivers.

  • Explain our role and how we will be helping them.

  • Stop to ask "How can we help you?" to ensure their needs are heard.

Resources

This year, teams at VCH will be celebrating #hellomynameis Day by showing us the ways in which they have been continuing to connect with their patients, clients and families, especially during the COVID pandemic.
