Physical, environmental, social and economic contexts impact your health

Acute care and clinical services are an important part of the health care system, but they can only be economically sustained if we place more emphasis on keeping people healthy and on addressing the root causes of poor health.

Determinants of health

There is evidence that health care interventions only contribute about 15% to an individual’s health. The physical, environmental, social and economic contexts within which you live have a much stronger impact on your health.

These are referred to as the 'non-medical determinants of health'. They include many factors such as social networks, gender, education, access to affordable housing, the level of poverty in your neighbourhood and the complex interrelationships among these factors.

Community developers

Community developers work with communities to help improve these areas, to promote overall health in neighbourhoods and in people’s day-to-day lives.
