Building amenities

The amenity areas include: activity room; library with Internet access; garden with a fountain and gazebo; hairdressing salon and spa; wellness room; dining room, private family dining room, and bistro.

English is the primary language.

Accreditation status

Not accredited by national organization.

Accreditation is not a requirement of assisted living but some residences have received accreditation status. It is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide to their residents, based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada

Philosophy of care

Assisted living provides accommodation, hospitality and personal care services in a manner that:

  • Promotes and maximizes choice, dignity, and control for Residents;
  • Promotes the Residents’ right to privacy as well as opportunities for social interaction;
  • Supports Residents’ independence through physical design features in the building and the delivery of support services;
  • Provides care and services that are shaped to meet the Residents’ needs; and
  • Creates a home-like environment that supports the Residents’ preferred lifestyle

Type of accommodation

All 67 subsidized Assisted Living units are one-bedroom suites (average 525 sq. ft.). All the suites can accommodate couples.

Furnishings

All the suites have kitchenettes equipped with a fridge, stove, and dishwasher, and have carpeted living rooms and bedrooms. The suites are unfurnished; residents provide their own furnishings.

Cost

Resident contribution is an amount up to 70% of after tax income, subject to a minimum and maximum amount. The resident contribution includes: monthly rental accomoddation, hospitality services (meals, housekeeping, etc) and personal care. Couples living together pay up to 70% of combined after tax income. 

Examples of items that are not included as part of the 70% include: telephone, cable, household and toiletry supplies, all medications, personal care supplies and insurance.

Food service

Lunch and dinner are provided. Residents have a choice of two entrées, and menus are rotated quarterly to ensure a variety of food choices. Generally, North American style food is served with the exception of dinner, for which Chinese food is served as a second option. Breakfast is not included. Guest can purchase meals with 24-hour advance notice.

Housekeeping & laundry

Included in the monthly resident charge is weekly housekeeping for residents’ suites and laundering of linens and towels. Washers and dryers are located on each floor for laundering residents’ personal clothing.

Special recreation opportunities

An activity coordinator develops a variety of programs & outings.

Emergency response (24) capacity

Emergency response (24 hours, 7 days) is included in rent.

Accessibility

Residents must be able to move around their suite on their own, and make their own way to the dining room, with or without mobility aides. At the main entrance, there is a drive-through drop-off area. There are two elevators. All the suites, corridors, and amenity areas are wheelchair accessible.

Pets are not permitted, except approved visiting pets.

Smoking policy

Smoking is prohibited in the building. Smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas.

Safety & security features

The building is fully equipped with sprinklers, including common areas and resident suites. 

There are entercoms with security cameras at both the front entrance and the secured underground-parking entrance. Smoke detectors are located in all suites and common areas. Grab bars are near the toilet and in the shower stall in all the bathrooms.

Visiting

Visitors are permitted 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Parking (tenant & visitor)

There is limited underground parking for residents for a charge of $25 per month. There is ample parking on Harrison Drive for visitors.

Neighbourhood & community amenities

The Icelandic Harbour is half a block from a bus-loop station and 1.5 km from Champlain Mall and Killarney Market where there are restaurants and retail stores, as well as a bank, pharmacy, and post office. More restaurants and retail stores are 2 kms north along Victoria Drive. The Killarney Community Center, only 3 km way, has a swimming pool, an exercise gym, and programs for seniors.

Facility-specific restrictions

The building is on a slope, and safety measures for the residents were incorporated in the design of the building.

Exit criteria

Not able to accommodate individuals who are not able to make the range of decisions necessary to function safely in Assisted Living.

If residents care needs change significantly such that they require 24-hour professional care, are unable to self direct their own care, or are unable to take direction in an emergency then they can no longer be accommodated in assisted living. Together with the VCH case manager, Icelandic Harbour will support residents in finding appropriate alternate arrangements.

Tour information

Tours are available to those that have been pre-approved by a case manager. Typically, tours are on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. To make an appointment, please contact Shelley Clark, our Recreation Coordinator, at her direct line 604.638.1875.
