Not accredited by national organization. Accreditation is not a requirement of assisted living but some residences have received accreditation status. It is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide to their residents, based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada.
Assisted living provides accommodation, hospitality and personal care services in a manner that:
- Promotes and maximizes choice, dignity, and control for Tenants;
- Promotes the Tenants’ right to privacy as well as opportunities for social interaction;
- Supports Tenants’ independence through physical design features in the building and the delivery of support services;
- Provides care and services that are shaped to meet the Tenants’ needs; and
- Creates a home-like environment that supports the Tenants’ preferred lifestyle”
There are 40 one-bedroom subsidized assisted living apartments. Each apartment is approximately 560 square feet with a full kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Closets in each room provide plenty of in-suite storage.
Each apartment has a balcony or patio for outside enjoyment and gardening. The large bathroom has a walk-in shower complete with grab bars.

Each apartment has a fridge/freeze: stovetop and extractor hood. All apartments have in-suite storage plus lockable storage in a common area.
Individual tenants pay 70% of after tax income subject to a minimum and maximum amount. The resident contribution includes: monthly rental accomodation, hospitality services (meals, housekeeping etc.) and personal care.
Couples living together pay up to 70% of combined after tax income.
Examples of items that are not included in the cost: telephone, cable, household and tolietery supplies, all emdications, personal care supplies and insurance.

Table service is provided in the dining room for lunch and supper. Meals can be delivered to the suites on a temporary basis if medically required. Occasional room service is available for a delivery fee.
Meals are prepared on-site under the direction of our Red Seal Chef. Menus are reviewed by a Registered Dietician.
Included in the monthly rent is weekly laundering of tenants’ bed linens and towels, as well as weekly light housekeeping of suites.
Complimentary laundry machines are located on each floor for tenant use. Personal laundry services are available for a fee.
Our Lifestyle and Leisure Services Coordinator organizes a range of social and recreational opportunities. Tenants have input into the types of events and activities, so there is something for everyone. A weekly calendar of events is delivered to each apartment, and daily activities are posted.
A state-of-the-art emergency response system is answered 24 hours a day by on-site staff.
Tenants must be able to move around in their own apartment and make their own way to the dining room, with or without mobility aides. Electric wheelchairs designed for indoor use may be permitted, with pre-approval of the Executive Director and if the conditions of the Kiwanis Garden Manor policy are met.
A scooter room with exterior access is close to the main entrance. Scooters are not permitted inside the building.
Small pets are permitted with pre-approval of the Executive Director, and if the conditions of the Kiwanis Garden Manor policy are met. Tenants must be able to care for and maintain their own pet. If the tenant becomes unable to care for the pet, or the pet becomes a concern for other tenants or staff, the tenant will be asked to make other arrangements for the pet.
Smoking is not permitted inside the apartments or building, on balconies or patios, or on the grounds.
Smoke detectors and sprinklers are located throughout the building. There is a monitored fire safety system. The main door is secured at all hours. Visitors must ring a tenant’s apartment to gain access. Security cameras are in use.
Visitors are welcome at any time. Quiet is requested out of respect for other tenants after 10 p.m.
Tenant parking is available with pre-approval, and if the conditions of the Kiwanis Garden Manor policy are met. There is visitor parking both on site and on the street. Occasional visitor overnight parking is available with prior approval.
Kiwanis Garden Manor is across the street from the Evergreen Extended Care Unit, within one block of the Powell River General Hospital and Community Health Centre and within two blocks from medical clinics, pharmacies, restaurants and shopping malls. The building is close to the recreation complex and Evergreen Theatre. The bus stop is also close by.
Kiwanis Garden Manor cannot accommodate people in Assisted Living who are unable to make decisions on their own behalf, or who require 24 hour professional nursing care. Tenants will be supported to find appropriate alternate accommodation.
Tours are available for those that have been pre-approved for assisted living by a case manager. Tours are available on the second Wednesday of each month and will begin at 2 p.m.
