Building amenities

The main floor of Youville has a TV lounge area, a dining/recreation area and a gift shop. The gift shop supports the needs of both Youville Residence and the Honoria Conway Assisted Living Campus of Care. Laundry is provided for the Residents and hair dressing services are available. A beautiful garden is located on the south side of the building.

Recognizing the importance of relationship and the company of family members, a Children’s Corner has been set up near the dining room area to encourage families sharing time with each other. Children look forward to coming for a visit with their grandparents when they know there are books to read to their grandparents and can even engage their grandparents in some of the games. Most residents have private phone and television access in their rooms.

Youville has a Chapel with wheelchair access.

Language, culture, religious affiliations

Youville is part of Providence Health Care, a Catholic based organization that welcomes and fosters the faith and spiritual traditions of all our Residents. Both our Residents and staff represent a diversity of cultures. Celebrations of different cultures are part of our recreation programs.

Accreditation status

Accreditation is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide to their residents, based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada or by CARF.

Philosophy of care

Providence Health Care five residential homes have adopted the Eden Alternative TM as a way of living our Mission everyday. The Eden Philosophy focuses on eliminating loneliness, helplessness and boredom by building healthy, vibrant communities. The care is person centered and is supported by the entire interdisciplinary team which includes recreation and rehabilitation therapy, social work, pastoral care, dietary, music therapy, pharmacy, volunteers, housekeeping, nursing and medicine.

Type of accommodation

Two floors are designated as the Home of 42 people; 21 residents per neighborhood (floor). Following the Eden Alternative Philosophy, each unit Neighborhood has been renamed to foster a home-like environment; Marguerite Place for the second floor (Special Care Unit) and Heather Place for the third floor.

Residents pay 80% of their after tax income which covers the cost of food and accommodation. Minimum and maximum rates apply. There may be other costs not included in the resident contribution. Visit our Costs page for more information.

Special recreation opportunities

There are specific neighbourhood programs such as baking, painting, story reading, community news sharing activities. Entertainers are booked in advance for Youville community programs where Residents will gather on the main floor. A bus outing is planned on a weekly basis. Special calendar events such as St. Patrick’s day, Mother/Father’s Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas and Open House are popular gatherings.

As part of the Eden Alternative, Youville has also adopted the Intergenerational Program where the children from the Montessori Daycare have planned activities with the Residents. There are special visits from Artsway, Circus from the Health Art Society, choirs from special church affiliated groups. Residents look forward to our monthly Residential Council meeting where food and activities are popular topics on the agenda. Will be re-establishing the Family Council.

The facility is wheelchair accessible; bathrooms allowing wheelchair access are available on each neighbourhood (floor) and two elevators plus a service elevator allow access to each floor. There are wide step stairways on both the north and south end of the building.

Motorized scooter policy

Use of motorized scooters will be based on an assessment by the occupational therapist to ensure safety for the residents and others. The motorized scooter when not in use is kept in the resident’s room.

Pet policy

Youville Residence used to have a pet cat. If a resident has a family pet that would like to come for a visit, this is allowed as long as the animal is healthy, well behaved, leashed and is supervised by the visitor. Families are requested to check with the nursing staff in advance to ensure residents(s) are well that day and to stop the visit if there is anyone who has an allergy to animal hair. The organization has the right to request that a pet not visit if there are any concerns.

Smoking policy

Youville is a smoke free premise.

Safety & security features

Smoke detectors and sprinklers are located in each room and in all strategic locations in the building. We have ADT monitoring for fire. A wander alert system is available for residents who may lose their way in and around the building. A personal duress alarm system is available for staff to use in case of emergency. Stairwell doors have security code or swipe card access, depending on the floor of the building. Emergency doors/exits are alarmed. The perimeter doors have automatic locked/unlocked mechanism activated on a pre-programmed schedule. LCD monitors are located in strategic locations. We have contracted with Paladin Security for patrols; however we do not have on-site security.
