Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic
The Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic helps people with severe spasticity manage their symptoms with an implanted, programmable drug pump system that delivers anti-spastic medications directly to the cerebral spinal fluid.
Spasticity is an involuntary increase in muscle tone that causes resistance to movement (muscle tightness). In our clinic, we treat patients with severe spasticity resulting from conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, brain injury, tumour, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or motor neuron disease such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
What to expect
The Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic team includes nurses, a physiatrist (rehabilitation doctor) and consultation with a surgeon.
- If you are referred to the intrathecal baclofen clinic, you will be assessed by our physiatrist to determine whether you are a candidate for the pump. If so, a test dose via lumbar puncture will be arranged for you.
- After you have seen the results of the intrathecal baclofen test dose and decide to go ahead with pump implantation, surgery will be arranged for you.
- Once your pump is implanted, you will regularly see the Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic team for maintenance, dose changes, medication refills and overall spasticity management.
