Creating the best start for our children

Promoting healthy development during the early years of life can contribute to life-long health outcomes.

We are working with partners across the region to create a healthier environment for children.

Understanding early child development

We have partnered with the Human Early Learning Partnership to share population data from a validated survey instrument called the Early Development Instrument (EDI).

The EDI is collected across the province and is used to establish a baseline estimate of the state of early child development at the age of school entry. This information is used to determine programs and policies that support the development of young children.

The EDI results are compiled into five subscales, or domains, that correspond to five general themes in early child development including:

  1. Physical health and well-being: Child is healthy, independent, ready each day etc.
  2. Social competence: Child plays, gets along with others and shares, is self-confident etc.
  3. Emotional maturity: Child is able to concentrate, help others, is patient, not aggressive or angry etc.
  4. Language and cognitive development: Child is interested in reading and writing, can count and recognize numbers, shapes etc.
  5. Communication skills and general knowledge: Child can tell a story, communicate with adults and children, articulate themselves etc.
