In the mid-1970s, two brothers, Frank and Cedric Garland were attending a presentation on the geographical incidence of cancer across the United States. They noticed that the highest incidence rates of colon cancer all appeared at the top of the map while low rates were all in the southern part of the country. From this they developed a hypothesis that vitamin D was somehow connected to cancer (sounds simple, but it took six years).

This was not just adults as a quarter of children aged two to 17 were also overweight — and overweight children grow into overweight adults.Over the short term weight loss from prescription drugs can reduce a number of health risks for someone who is obese, but the real solution, even with the drugs, is lifestyle change: diet and exercise. It does not work.In the first half of the 20th Century, many countries, provinces and communities experimented with prohibition on the consumption, sale, manufacture, import and export of alcohol. These bans occurred for various periods of time in Canada with Prince Edward Island holding out the longest. In the U.S. “prohibition” lasted from 1920 to 1933.
