Vancouver Coastal Health - Events

Regenerative Medicine and Global Health Forums

Internationally renowned cardiovascular scientist, educator and health policy visionary Dr. Victor J. Dzau, Chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University will visit Vancouver on February 6, 2012.

While in Vancouver, Dr. Dzau will participate in these events:

Forum on Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine for Cardiac Care, 12-1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Hospital, New Lecture Theatre
Forum on Global Health, 4-6 p.m. at the UBC Life Sciences Centre (LSC1)

About Dr. Dzau

In 2011, Dr. Dzau was awarded the prestigious Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research for his outstanding achievement in fundamental and clinical cardiovascular research, for innovations in medical education, and for compassionate leadership in global health.

Dr. Dzau's visit is sponsored by UBC, the Institute for Heart & Lung Health, Friends of CIHR, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, Genome Canada, Rx&D, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

First Steps to Prevention

First Steps to Prevention is a free program people who are at risk of getting a chronic conditions and are ready to make healthy lifestyle changes. It's a fun and interactive prevention program, led by a registered dietitian and registered nurse, that teaches people the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity, and how to manage a healthy weight. Participants can create personal goals and action plans.

Is this program for you?

Are you overweight?
Do you have high cholesterol?
Do you have high blood pressure?
Have you been told you have prediabetes? (or borderline diabetes)
Have you had Gestational Diabetes?
Are you physically inactive?
Do you have unhealthy eating habits?

This is not for those who already have diabetes but rather for those who are pre-diabetic, hypertensive, overweight, have a history of gestational diabetes, are physically inactive or just have unhealthy eating habits.

Advancing Knowledge of Healthy Aging

Join us for an evening of presentations regarding our current knowledge of the interplay between physical activity, cognitive function, mobility, and aging, as well as an introduction to the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging; the largest, national, long-term study of adult development and aging in Canada.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Max Cynader, director of the Brain Research Centre and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at VCH and UBC as well as a lead investigator for the Genetics and EpiGenetics component of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Take part via video conferencing from the University of Victoria, University of Northern BC or UBC-Okanagan.
