VCH is moving forward with some exciting plans to improve services for our home support clients.
After a thorough review of how we deliver home support services in our region, we will be transitioning to in-house delivery of home support services. This model supports our vision of enhancing services to clients living in the community by providing team-based, accessible and coordinated care across all our Communities of Care. It will also help us offer our clients improved quality of life, with more time at home and less time spent in acute and residential care. As changes unfold over the next 12 – 18 months, VCH is committed to ensuring continuity of care for clients and of employment for home support staff.
Currently, Coastal Health (North Shore, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky) has Home Support services delivered by VCH and we don’t expect these services to change.
Information for Clients & Families
Our vision is to enhance services to clients living in the community by providing team-based, accessible and coordinated care. This will improve client quality of life with more time at home and less time spent in acute and residential care. Planning for this new, integrated, model of care is underway and will involve consultation with our service partners, unions, staff and clients.
While we are planning the our new model of service delivery, clients should not experience any changes to services or supports. Once we transition to in house services, staff may transfer from their current service providers to VCH and we will work to minimize any impacts. When the new model is implemented, home support workers will be members of a health care team dedicated to supporting people at home and keeping them as safe and independent as possible, for as long as possible.

The transition to in-house home support enables VCH to enhance services with a team-based approach that is more coordinated and consistent. This includes reducing the time spent traveling between client visits, improving flexibility for home support workers and increasing job satisfaction.
VCH will be transferring employment to comparable positions to all qualified home support workers currently employed with contract service providers. Details will be worked out in collaboration with unions as part of a Labour Adjustment Plan. There will also be new postings as VCH increases staffing to meet client needs.
There will be no immediate changes as we work with our contracted home support service providers and with the Community Bargaining Association and Nurses Bargaining Association to ensure a smooth transition of services and staff to VCH. Staff will continue to work in their current jobs and locations and clients will continue to receive the services and supports they require.
Meetings will be scheduled over the coming weeks to update staff on this planning process and respond to any questions you may have.
