Post-surgery information

After surgery, you will only be taking sips of clear fluids. This is to allow your suture site (staple line) to heal and to reduce the risk of a post-operative leak. You will slowly increase your clear fluid intake to 2 tbsp every 15 minutes. The following videos outline the usual diet progression for people having bariatric surgery.

Learn more about nutrition after surgery in our Richmond metabolic & bariatric surgery manual.

Clear fluids (Post-operative days 0 - 2)

Full fluids (Discharge to post-op week 3)

Pureed foods (Post-op week 4 - 5)

Soft solids (Post-op week 6 to 3 months)

Normal texture (Post-op month 3 and beyond)
