Cessation resources

As part of our public health mandate, the following resources are aimed at broadening the awareness of community health care professionals on nicotine addiction, successful cessation processes and nicotine replacement therapy.

Brief Intervention for Tobacco Use

We offer training for health professionals interested in gaining skills and knowledge in topics such as brief intervention for tobacco use, nicotine addiction and nicotine replacement therapy. Contact 604.675.3801 or smokefree@vch.ca for more information.

Other resources

Clinical Tobacco Intervention Recognition Program

The Healthy Heart Society of British Columbia offers a web and paper based course reading materials and quiz for health professionals to build knowledge and skills in evidence based clinical tobacco intervention.

Tobacco and Public Health: From Theory to Practice

The Ontario Tobacco Research Unit offers a free online course with modules on prevention, cessation and protection. The cessation module deals with the complexities of quitting smoking, the roles that nicotine addiction and motivation play in the quitting process and smoking cessation best practices.

Nursing Best Practice Cessation Champions Project

This initiative of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario is aimed at promoting and implementing best practice cessation guidelines into daily nursing practice.

Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey

The primary objective of this Statistics Canada survey is to track changes in smoking status, especially for populations most at risk, such as the 15 to 24 year olds.

Resources include best practice tobacco cessation guidelines, including the Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence-Clinical Practice guidelines.
