Mental Health - Acute Care at Home

Our Acute Home Based Treatment (AHBT) service offers short-term, mental health treatment in home settings.

This service is for people experiencing an increase in symptoms or distress related to mental illness or substance use.

Acute Home Based Treatment offers:

1. Treatment in a comfortable, familiar environment with minimal disruption to day-to-day living.  
2. Choice, so that hospital care is not the only option. 
3. Coordinated treatment with clients and their caregivers.

How does treatment work? The AHBT team will visit your home to discuss your symptoms and prescribe and monitor medications as required. The number and length of visits will depend on your care plan. 

If you already have a psychiatrist, the team doctor will collaborate with him or her to coordinate your treatment. When you are feeling better, you can return to the services in your community that meet your needs.

Who's eligible? To be eligible for this program you must be:

1. 17 years and older
2. Living in Richmond, Vancouver or on the North Shore
3. Experiencing a worsening of symptoms or distress due to mental illness and/or substance use concerns.
4. Willing and able to accept care at home.

1. Actively suicidal or at risk to harm others.
2. Not living in a safe home environment, for example there are weapons or other individuals with a history of violence in your home.
