Hearing Services for Schools

The early detection of hearing loss is very important for speech and language development.

Hearing can be accurately assessed for children of any age or developmental level.
Kindergarten hearing screening All kindergarten students have their hearing screened in school as part of the province wide screening program. Notice to parents and guardians about hearing screeningPublic health will send the letter below to parents to inform them of the screening date:

Grades 1-12 hearing screeningSchools can arrange hearing screeing for students, grades 1-12, with the verbal consent of the parents or guardians using the request form below:

If you make a request for hearing screening at least one week before kindergarten screening is scheduled at your school and space is available, students will be screened at this time. Otherwise, students will be screened at the clinic within a few weeks of the request.

When can a child get re-screened for hearing? Students who have passed a hearing screening within the past 12 months are not re-screened unless there has been a change in their health or a family history of progressive hearing loss.
Follow-up after kindergarten and grades 1-12 screeningStudents who show outer and/or middle ear disorders at the screening are advised to seek medical consultation prior to a follow-up screening.
Some students are referred to an audiologist for further assessment. Appointments are made directly with the parent/guardian.How do I access screening resultsHearing test results are provided to parents and guardians who are encouraged to share these results with the school.

In accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, schools must receive consent from parents or gardians to access hearing results using the consent below.
