Section 6 - School Health Manual
If you have any concerns about a student’s vision please discuss them with the student’s parent/guardian and encourage them to take their child for an assessment by an optometrist.
Make a referral for vision screening If you have concerns about a student’s vision, discuss them with the parents or send home the request form below. You should also give a copy of the completed form to your school public health nurse so he or she can follow-up if necessary. Kindergarten vision screening We also screen kindergarten children for possible visual defects. We do not diagnose vision disorders. Instead, we identify potential problems that need to be further examined by an optometrist. We will contact schools to arrange suitable screening dates and send notices home to parents about the screening. Free glasses We provide free eye glasses to a limited number of children from low income families. A financial statement from families is not required. Please limit your requests to families with limited resources. Families receiving social assistance must first apply through their local Ministry of Child and Family Development Office . The BC Healthy Kids Program also helps low-income families with the basic cost of eye ware for children. Request free glasses You can make a referral for free eye glasses by submitting the request form below: More information about vision services for schools Download Section 6 of the 2011 School Health Manual for information about the signs in vision to look out for and the services we offer.
