Richmond to gain 210 residential care beds with new facilities

The Trellis Group will build and operate a 135-bed facility on the Hamilton Lands in east Richmond. The Hamilton Village Care Centre is scheduled to open in February 2019. Fraserview, a member of the Kaigo Seniors Living Group, will redevelop and expand by 75 beds. The completion date for that project is early 2020. 

The new residential care centres will enhance residents’ privacy and the experience of care by offering single rooms, private washrooms, more activity space and better access for wheelchairs.

“I thank Vancouver Coastal Health for its work on making sure our loved ones who need the supports offered in a residential care home will have more choices and options when the time comes to make the move into a centre that offers higher levels of care,” said Linda Reid, Richmond-East MLA.

“The addition of over 200 residential care beds is great news as it creates more care closer to home, which is important for families,” said Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap.

“The new residential care homes means more high-quality care for loved ones in Richmond and I commend Vancouver Coastal Health and its partners for taking the first steps in making these new beds a reality,” said Teresa Wat, MLA for Richmond Centre.

“We are still several years away from welcoming residents to these two new homes. Much planning and development work will now be getting underway,” says Jennifer MacKenzie, Chief Operating Officer, VCH Richmond. “But entering into these agreements is a significant step in making these plans a reality. These two initiatives will go a long way in supporting the health of seniors in Richmond, including those with complex care needs.”                     

This expansion of residential care in Richmond is part of a larger 10-year rejuvenation plan across VCH. It follows  a rigorous process to replace several hundred beds in residential care centres that no longer fully meet residents’ needs, and significantly increases the number of beds in communities that currently don’t have an adequate supply for the population they serve.

To date, VCH has signed agreements for about 600 beds in new and expanded facilities, and an additional 300 beds are planned over the next several years across the health region.

VCH is responsible for the delivery of $3.4 billion in community, hospital and residential care to more than one million people in communities including Richmond, Vancouver, the North Shore, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky corridor, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.
