North Shore gains 43 residential care beds in a new facility
Vancouver, BC - Vancouver Coastal Health has signed a contract with the Trellis Group to build and operate a new 180-bed residential care centre on the North Shore. The Creekstone Care Centre, which will result in an increase of 43 publicly funded residential care beds on the North Shore, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018.
“Making sure we take care of our seniors is a top priority for government and this announcement will help make sure the health care needs of residents of the North Shore are met,” said Jane Thornthwaite, MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour.
“This is fantastic news for the North Shore as Creekstone Care Centre will mean more care for seniors closer to home, which is important for families,” said Naomi Yamamoto, North Vancouver – Lonsdale MLA.
“Seniors helped build British Columbia and it is our responsibility to make sure they are taken care of and today’s announcement will help us meet that goal,” said Jordan Sturdy, West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA.
“This contract recognizes that even more than the rest of the province, the population of the North Shore is aging significantly. Taking steps to increase care beds will assist local seniors and their families,” said West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan.
Creekstone Care Centre will consist of several small “houses” within a single building. Each house provides care for a group of residents, complete with their own dining room and lounge. This model of small homes is known as “home and neighbourhood design” and is considered a best practice in residential care, enhancing residents’ privacy and care.
Creekstone will include 150 publicly funded beds and 30 that are private-pay.
“This is a significant step in meeting the care needs of North Shore residents,” says Mike Nader, Chief Operating Officer, VCH-Coastal Community of Care. “Creekstone Care Centre will enhance residents’ privacy and the experience of care by offering single rooms, private washrooms, more activity space and better access for wheelchairs. We will be working closely with the Trellis Group to ensure a smooth transition for residents to their new homes.”
This expansion of residential care on the North Shore is part of a larger 10-year rejuvenation strategy across Vancouver Coastal Health. It follows a rigorous process to replace several hundred beds in residential care centres that no longer fully meet resident needs, and to significantly increase the number of beds in communities that currently don’t have an adequate supply for the population they serve.
To date, VCH has signed agreements for about 600 beds in new and expanded facilities, and an additional 300 beds are planned over the next several years across VCH.
Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for the delivery of $3.4 billion in community, hospital and residential care to more than one million people in communities including Richmond, Vancouver, the North Shore, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky corridor, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.
