Guidelines for opioid addiction & treatment
The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) and the Ministry of Health has developed provincial guidelines for the treatment of opioid addiction. The guidelines aim to improve prescribers’ knowledge of the various medical and psychosocial treatments available for opioid addiction in the face of the growing problem of opioid overdoses attributable to fentanyl and other illicit and prescription opioids. These guidelines build off the foundational Vancouver Coastal Health Guidelines for the Treatment of Opioid Addiction (November 2015), which were reviewed in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The guidelines strongly recommend buprenorphine/naloxone as a first-line treatment for opioid addiction but support a diverse array of possible treatments, recognizing that different approaches are necessary for different patients and circumstances.
