A hospitalist’s move to Vancouver: big-city amenities meet small-town charm

Dr. Sahil Jain, Hospitalist

From India to the United States, Hospitalist Dr. Sahil Jain now calls Vancouver, British Columbia (B.C.) home, and is a valued member of the health-care team at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

Having worked in most health authorities in B.C., he believes VCH is most committed to both patients and doctors. “Their services are well balanced to the needs of the community and VCH leadership is constantly adapting to needs and demands of the area,” he shares.

Dr. Jain works at Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia Hospital treating and managing a wide range of acute, chronic and complex illnesses across medical wards, intensive care units, emergency rooms, and more. He occasionally works in community family practice at VCH as well.

Living and working in Vancouver

Dr. Jain values the variety of practice settings available, “I can work in a city-based Level 1 trauma centre; I can also work within an hour’s drive in smaller community settings like Squamish; or in 15 minutes, I can be in a small-town city hospital in Richmond or North Vancouver,” he observes.  The diverse settings and work locations allow him to tailor his practice based on his career goals, with access to specialists, hospital services, and varying levels of acuity.

A key difference Dr. Jain highlights between the health-care systems in Canada and the U.S. is that "our health-care system has a fair bit of autonomy built into medical practice," he says, appreciating the flexibility it offers to physicians.

For Dr. Jain, Vancouver offers the best of both worlds – a big city with a small-town feel.” He loves the bike routes, slower traffic, and easy access to nature. The significantly lower crime, year-round outdoor activities, close-knit neighbourhoods, down-to-earth people and local businesses add to its charm. He and his family appreciate the size of the city and the welcoming, diverse community.

Relocating to British Columbia

Dr. Jain grew up in Delhi, India, where he completed his high school education before heading to Boston, Massachusetts for college, medical school, and his master's degree in engineering. Afterwards, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, to attend business school, followed by a three-year family medicine residency in southern Pennsylvania. He ultimately decided to settle in B.C. for its work-life balance, mix of big-city amenities and small-town charm, and a smoother path to licensure.
