Taylor Wilson, Physiotherapist

Taylor Wilson

First up on our highlight of Physiotherapy Month is Taylor Wilson, a physiotherapist (PT) working with acute in-patient and out-patients at Squamish General Hospital with Vancouver Coastal Health.

What she enjoys most about her job is helping individuals regain their mobility and rehabilitate them in order to be successfully discharged back into the community and return to the activities they enjoy.

“I love the patients and team members I get to work with on a daily basis,” she says. “Our team is very collaborative and I feel supported in my role every day.”

After graduating from PT school, Taylor knew she wanted to work in the public sector as that was where the bulk of her student placements was. Growing up on the North Shore, Taylor applied to Lions Gate Hospital and worked there for seven years. “There was something about working at the very hospital I grew up near was a full circle for me,” she says. “I felt so lucky to be able to help people in my community.” Taylor moved to Squamish in 2016 and has the same good feelings about giving back to her new community.

For Taylor, she is inspired by the massive accumulation of small moments of working with individuals who have made her smile and when she was able to bring a smile to someone’s face while working with them. “Seeing the massive amount of progress and hard work in my patients recovering from COVID-19 is very inspiring,” she says. “To help someone see their progress from the first day we worked together to the day they are able to walk out of the hospital is a proud moment.”

Taylor tells us that she feels well supported in her role. “Not only by my colleagues that I work with and see on a daily basis, but also the extended team that is always available by phone or email.”

The best way to describe how Taylor incorporates the VCH values (We Care for Everyone, We Are Always Learning and We Strive for Better Results) is by pushing herself to be a better PT on a daily basis. “Whether that is continuing education or taking specific courses for my area of practice, collaborating and providing support to my team and members in other settings, I strive to be more understanding of my patient’s needs and goals daily.”

On her days off, you can find Taylor hiking in the mountains! Living in the Sea to Sky corridor allows her to be surrounded by beautiful trails and stunning views. “A perfect getaway for me would be to hike up a local mountain, camp overnight, and take a much-needed dip in an alpine lake.”
