Building amenities

There is a bathing spa on each floor, a visiting hairdresser and fireplace nooks for quiet reading. A large-screen TV, piano and fully equipped kitchen are located in the dining area with a small, separate dining room that tenants and guests can use. Tenant laundry machines are on site and a guest suite is available for short stays at a reasonable cost. A secure, outdoor, furnished garden area and BBQ are available.

Language, culture, religious affiliations

English is the primary language but the staff is multicultural and speaks various languages.

Accreditation status

Not accredited by a national organization.

Accreditation is not a requirement of assisted living but some residences have received accreditation status. It is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide to their residents, based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada. 

Philosophy of care

Assisted living provides accommodation, hospitality and personal care services in a manner that:

• Promotes and maximizes choice, dignity, and control for Residents;
• Promotes the Residents’ right to privacy as well as opportunities for social interaction;
• Supports Residents’ independence through physical design features in the building and the delivery of support services;
• Provides care and services that are shaped to meet the Residents’ needs; and
• Creates a home-like environment that supports the Residents’ preferred lifestyle” 

Type of accommodation

There are 30 one-bedroom (typically 400 sq. feet) units.

Furnishings

Each suite has a small kitchenette with a bar-size fridge and microwave. Tenants furnish their suites. The Lions Gate Hospital Foundation donates a few fully furnished suites.

Food service

Table service is provided in the main dining room at lunch and supper—a choice of two entrees is provided at all meals. Two daily snacks are also provided. Special diets are available upon request. A registered dietitian reviewed the meal plan.

Housekeeping & laundry

Included in the monthly rent is the weekly laundering of linens and towels and weekly housekeeping of the tenant’s suite. Washing machines located on the first and second floor are available for tenant’s personal use.

Special recreation opportunities

The recreation director will meet with tenants to determine their interest in activities. A rich social and recreational program is available at Cedar Garden.

Emergency response (24-hour) capacity

Staff are on duty 24 hours/day. A call-bell system is installed in the bathroom of each unit.

Accessibility

Tenants must be able to move around their suite independently and make their way to the dining room, with or without mobility aides.

Motorized scooter policy

A small scooter storage area is available.

Pet policy

Visiting pets only.

Smoking policy

Outdoor smoking room available off VCH grounds. Indoors is a smoke-free environment.

Safety & security features

Smoke detectors are located in all rooms and common areas and a sprinkler system fully covers the building. The building is secured at all hours. Visitors must ring tenant suite or reception to gain access. Staff on duty 24 hours/day. 

Visiting

Main doors are locked so visitors must ring the tenant’s suite for access.

Neighbourhood & community amenities

Located in Lynn Valley, the building is a short bus ride away from Lynn Valley Shopping Centre, which includes a grocery store and post office, within walking distance of a bus route. Cedar Garden is co-located with Cedarview Lodge, a 90-bed complex care facility.

Facility-specific restrictions

All suites are wheelchair accessible.

Exit criteria

Cedar Garden cannot accommodate tenants who cannot make decisions on their behalf or require 24-hour professional care. Tenants will be supported to find appropriate alternate arrangements through their case manager.

Tours are available individually for those preliminarily assessed for assisted living by a case manager.
