Managing medical conditions in schools
Public Health Nurses, Paediatric Community Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, and Physiotherapists are available to support school staff training for children with health conditions and medical care needs. Our goal is to support schools to safely manage student health conditions at school.
Students with emergency health conditions that impact their safety while at school
To support students with emergency health conditions that impact their safety while at school, including:
- Anaphylaxis
- Seizures - not requiring rescue medication
- Diabetes - managing insulin independently and/or have rescue medication for hypoglycemia (glucagon)
- Asthma
Take our online training below, and reach out to your School Public Health Nurse for: hands-on skills practice and guidance on safe school practices to ensure the safety of students with these health conditions at school.
Students with more complex medical conditions needs or tasks
To support students with more complex medical conditions needs or tasks, including:
- Seizure disorder - with rescue medication at school
- Diabetes - not yet managing insulin independently at school
- Adrenal insufficiency (Solu-Cortef)
- Enteral tube feeds
- Catheterization
Reach out to your Community Paediatric Health Nurse (Nursing Support Services) for education, training, and/or delegation of nursing care tasks to staff.
Students with complex medical needs that impact their ability to function independently in school
For students with complex medical needs that impact their ability to function independently in school, including:
- Neurodevelopmental delays, including Autism
- Genetic disorders
- Medical conditions such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy
Public schools: Reach out to your School Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist (Pediatric team) to provide education, training, and consultation for school staff.

For safely managing anaphylaxis, seizures (without rescue medication), diabetes (for students who manage insulin independently), and asthma at school. School staff are encouraged to complete courses on an annual basis.
