Portrait of Bob Chapman

Meet Rick, a Psychiatric Worker at VCH. In his role, he assists clients with their daily needs, ensures that clients are in a safe environment, oversees leisure programs, escorts clients to their appointments and assists medical staff when needed.

Today we are pleased to highlight Rick Garcia, a psychiatric worker at the Joseph & Rosalie Segal & Family Health Centre with Vancouver Coastal Health.

In his role, he assists clients with their daily needs, ensures that clients are in a safe environment, oversees leisure programs, escorts clients to their appointments and assists medical staff when needed.

Rick tells us that seeing ill clients recover and the great teamwork amongst the staff are the two things he enjoys most about his role.

“I am always inspired when I see our clients’ condition improve and are on their way to being discharged. They show a genuine appreciation for the care we provide and give us a sincere thank you when saying goodbye.”

He speaks highly of the multidisciplinary team and says “we all work together and support each other to ensure all our clients are taken care of”. This includes all the nurses, doctors, social workers, occupational therapists, pharmacists, housekeeping, food services and others.

“We are very fortunate to have a caring team,” says Rick. “Our unit educator and leadership always make sure we are kept up to date with new ideas regarding patient care.”

Outside of work, Rick considers himself a ‘music junkie’. “Over the years, I’ve learned different stringed instruments including guitar, mandolin, banjo and the ukulele, and presently different percussion instruments.”
