Building amenities

A tuck shop and hairdresser are available for tenant use. There is a library, computer lab with internet access and games room located in the core section of the building. There is also a Wellness Centre and an Ambulatory Care Clinic available for tenant and community use.

Language, culture, religious affiliations

The Salvation Army Southview Heights provides dignity, choice and independence in a community built on Christian principles for senior adults requiring supported living.

Accreditation status

Certificate of Accreditation in accordance with The Salvation Army Social Services Accreditation Standards and Review Procedures.

Accreditation is not a requirement of assisted living but some residences have received accreditation status. It is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide to their residents, based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada

Philosophy of care

Assisted living provides accommodation, hospitality and personal care services in a manner that:

  • Promotes and maximizes choice, dignity, and control for Residents;
  • Promotes the Residents’ right to privacy as well as opportunities for social interaction;
  • Supports Residents’ independence through physical design features in the building and the delivery of support services;
  • Provides care and services that are shaped to meet the Residents’ needs; and
  • Creates a home-like environment that supports the Residents’ preferred lifestyle 

Type of accommodation

There are 53 subsidized assisted living one-bedroom units. They are between 558 and 581 square feet. Each suite includes a kitchenette, with full size refrigerator and stove, living room, balcony or patio, separate bedroom and personal bathroom.

Furnishings

All suites are equipped with a stove and refrigerator. Residents are to provide their own furnishings. Comfortable furnishings are provided in both the dining area and common amenity space.

Cost

Resident contribution is an amount up to 70% of after tax income, subject to a minimum and maximum amount. The resident contribution includes: monthly rental accomoddation, hospitality services (meals, housekeeping, etc) and personal care. Couples living together pay up to 70% of combined after tax income. 

Examples of items that are not included as part of the 70% include: telephone, cable, household and toiletry supplies, all medications, personal care supplies and insurance. 

Food service

Table service will be provided in the main dining room at Lunch and Supper, with a minimum of 2 alternates for each meal. Special diets available upon request. Snacks will be available at designated times.

Housekeeping & laundry

Included in the monthly rent is weekly laundering of linens and towels, as well as weekly housekeeping of tenants’ suites. Laundry facilities are available for personal use. 

Special recreation opportunities

Social/Recreational activities are available on a daily basis as well as spiritual & religious care and health maintenance activities.

Emergency response (24) capacity

Each suite is equipped with a 24-hour response system, which is monitored by on-site staff. Included with the system is a pendant for personal use.

Accessibility

Residents must be able to move around their suite on their own, and make their way to the dining room, with or without mobility aides. 

Motorized scooter policy

Scooter parking in garage area only. No scooters permitted in main resident areas.

Pet policy

Pets are not permitted.

Smoking policy

This is a smoke-free building. Smoking will be permitted outside the building in designated areas only.

Safety & security features

The building is fully equipped with sprinklers, including common areas and resident suites. 

Smoke detectors are located in all rooms, elevators and common areas. Main door is secured at all hours. Visitors ring tenant’s suite to gain access to the building. 24-hour on-site staff.

Visiting

Main doors are always locked, so visitors will have to ring for access.

Parking (tenant & visitor)

There are secure parking stalls for residents. Visitor parking will be located in the outside parking area. Street parking on 58th and Kerr as well.

Neighbourhood & community amenities

Located next door to the Champlain Mall (Bank, grocery, dry cleaning, restaurants, hair dresser, market). City bus stops just outside Southview on Kerr St. The Fire department is one block away. Champlain Heights Recreation Centre also in close proximity.

Facility-specific restrictions

Guest suites available to visitors for a per diem rate per night. Lunch and supper meals are available for guests at a per meal charge. 

Exit criteria

Not able to accommodate individuals who are not able to make the range of decisions necessary to function safely in Assisted Living or who require 24-hour professional care. Residents will be supported to find appropriate alternate arrangements.

Tours are available for those that have been pre-approved by a case manager.
