The Prenatal and Early Years Program provides nursing services to answer questions about birthing parent, baby, or family health and provides access to Public Health services.

What to expect

Birthing parents who give birth in a hospital will receive a phone call from a Public Health Nurse within 24 to 48 hours after being discharged from hospital.

Birthing parents who receive care from a midwife will receive care in the first few days from their midwife and will be contacted by a Public Health Nurse within six to eight weeks.

Services offered by a Public Health Nurse

In the Prenatal & Early Years Program, Public Health Nurses provide nursing services to answer questions about birthing parent, baby, or family health and provide access to public health services including

  • prenatal support,
  • after birth care of a new baby,
  • child health clinics (immunization),
  • breastfeeding support, 
  • telephone support and advice,
  • capacity building,
  • parenting support and
  • screening and referral to developmental screening.
